In this paper, we examine what students learn through experiences as student teachers and school assistants in elementary schools. 51 students, taking the teacher training course of our university, are research participants and engage activities as student teachers and school assistants, intermittently spanning two years, in municipal schools of Fukuyama City. As data, we collect the records that they made of their experiences gained from those activities and analyze them using the qualitative method. Our findings are summarized as follows: (i) The students have taken to understand teaching from multiple perspectives which are required for teacher development, and to consider what abilities as teachers is necessary for themselves, (ii) they have taken to develop their understanding of children though activities as school assistants and of student teaching except for lessons, and to broaden and deepen their understanding of lessons , associating it with their understanding of children, ever developed through activities as mentioned above.
