Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate the features of Elijah in the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan (Ps. J.), a highly paraphrased Aramaic translation of the Pentateuch, through careful comparison with the representation of Elijah in the contemporary literature. a. The name Elijah is Ps. J. in followed by the title "Priest", or even "High Priest." b. Elijah in Ps. J. is identified with Phinehas, the Priest, or overlapped with Johanan, a High Priest in the Hasmonean Dynasty. c. Elijah in Ps. J. appears in a messianic context. Our inquiry brings to light the finding that combination of these feature-namely placing the priestly Elijah in a messianic context-is a very crucial point in Ps. J.'s Elijah. Among the contemporary literature, Luke's implication that Elijah is John the Baptist bears slight resemblance to this feature. Our observation suggest Ps. J.'s unique position in Jewish literature and the dynamic inter-cultural stream in Judaism and Christianity in the late antiquity.
