Abstract

When you visit a Guandi Temple (Guandi miao), regardless of whether it is in China or other places, we almost certainly find a trio of images: the majestic, red-faced Guan Yu, flanked by the white-faced and graceful youth, Guan Ping, and the imposing, black-faced Zhou Cang, brandishing his blue-dragon halberd. It has often been pointed out that while Guan Yu and Guan Ping actually existed, Zhou Cang cannot be found in the historical record. Hu Xiaowei has hypothesized that Zhou Cang has his origins in a figure from the Zhejiang region known as Zhou Jiangjun (General Zhou). It is thought that in Zhejiang, Zhou Xiaozi was also known as Zhou Jiangjun and became the object of a certain cult following. But it has been difficult to establish the connection between this deity and Guandi. The author suggests that a passage in the text Daofa huiyuan referring to a character named Zhou Chang Jiangjun may be a prototype for the figure of Zhou Cang.
