Abstract

The yomihon (a genre of fiction, written mainly in early 19th century Edo) by Santo Kyoden and Kyokutei Bakin produced in l806-07 have never been placed properly in context when tracing the formation of style of historical legend-based yomihon. This paper examines subject matters of 27 works by them of these years, in terms of how important each subject matter is to each work's construction, innovation, and theme, and comes to the conclusion that Kyoden's Sakurahime Zanden Akebono-zoshi (The dawn story of the whole life of princess Sakura, published in the 12th month 1805) is at the peak of what they both aimed for together. It supports the author's hypothesis that they were in a co-operative relationship until 1807.
