Abstract

This study examines what is "chiiki", a Japanese word standing for 'region', 'community' etc., in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by referring 8 declarations of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development held in 2014 in Okayama and Nagoya, Japan. "Chiiki" is one of the key concepts of ESD in Japan. These declarations are written in English and all of them are translated into Japanese. In the declarations, relatively smaller spatial scales such as 'local' and 'community' are often translated into "chiiki" and they are frequently used. Connecting these scales with national and global scales while learning from local communities is important in ESD. However, these declarations often lack learning contents and viewpoints of "chiiki". Collaboration with geographic education which has much experiences on these points is important for realizing sustainable society.
