抄録

[概要] ソーントン・ワイルダーの後期のサイクル劇のひとつである「人間の七つの大罪」については, 彼の生誕１００年を祝って, １９９７年に全７作品がまとめて出版された. しかし, 今回論じる４作品に関しては, 彼の生前には, 「バーニス」は英語で上演されたもののドイツ語でしか出版されず, 「ドアベルが鳴り響く」と「シェイクスピアと聖書」はほぼできあがっていたにもかかわらず未完成のままとなり, 「セメント・ハンズ」は完成していたものの上演されることはなかった. これら４つの一幕劇をワイルダーが出版しなかった・完成させなかった理由は, くり返される主題を常に新しい表現形式で提示してきたワイルダーが, これらの作品ではそれをできていないことを認識していたからであろう. [Abstract] All of the seven one-act plays included in one of his cycle plays, The Seven Deadly Sins, which were written in Thornton Wilder's late years were published in 1997 in celebration of the centennial of his birth.　However, four of the seven plays discussed here were not published or finished in Wilder's lifetime: "Bernice "was staged in English but published only in German; "A Ringing of Doorbells" and "In Shakespeare and the Bible "were left unfinished though they were nearly completed; "Cement Hands" was not staged though it was finished. The reason why Wilder did not publish or finish them must have been as follows: Wilder always expressed his frequent themes in different artistic styles for each work, and so he must have realized he had not shown any new style in stating the themes for the four one-act plays.
