Abstract

In this essay, I took notice of the Shirakawa House who organized the Shinto priests in the late Tokugawa period, in order to examine the preconditions for the organization of Shinto or Sectarian Shinto in the Meiji period. Japan during the Edo period was a class society so the Shirakawas had no choice but to specialize in providing a particular social status. It may be said , however, that they were able to incorporate all kinds of religious activities vigorously because philosophy was not of any concern. Along with the growth of the group, the Shirakawas began organizing a bureaucratic system. The bureaucratic characteristics of the organization that controlled Shinto after the Meiji period should be looked at more or less in the context of the early modem society. On the strength of the development of urban society in the last part of the Tokugawa period, the Shirakawas embraced religious practitioners and organizations that were supported by urban citizens. The Shirakawas also took advantage of functions f urban society to grow themselves. After the Meiji Restoration, however, some magical rites of the Shirakawa House were banned. This seems to be where Shinto in the Edo period differs from that in the Meiji period. The Meiji Restoration denied the organization of Shinto by tbe Shirakawas. Nevertheless, the mold created during the Tokugawa period remained as the prototype of the Shinto organization in the modern period.
