Shigeru Mizuki said that he was 80 percent Goethe and that Goethe was the only person he could respect. Mizuki was a cartoonist of the baby-boom generation whose major creative works were Kitaro in the Cemetery and Sanpei the Kappa, and Goethe is the famous German writer. This article addresses the connection between the greatest German writer and the Japanese yokai cartoonist who captivated the minds of post-war children. The author compares the relationship between Mizuki and Goethe, who became the former’s mental support, with those of Johann Eckermann who wrote about Goethe, and Eishiro Kameo who translated Goethe into Japanese.
