Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method for detecting positions of a pedestrian by cooperation of multiple cars with directional antennas and inter-vehicle communication in order to support drivers for pedestrian safety. In our method, each pedestrian periodically broadcasts a beacon, and each car receives the beacon and measures the distance and the angle of arrival from the pedestrian with a directional antenna. The method has the cars exchange measured data one another and let them improve the estimate accuracy of the position of the pedestrian with the exchanged data. Through computer simulation, we have confirmed that the error of the position estimation of a target pedestrian is about 3 meters with 3 cooperating neighbor cars whereas that is about 13 meters without cooperating.
