Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the appearance of “Shokuinshitu (faculty room) culture”, which contributes to the development of competence among faculty members, through an analysis of interviews with one in-service teacher. These interviews were analyzed using SCAT proposed by Otani (2008) on a trial basis. As a result, the following two situations were identified. 1) “Teacher A” examined the “efforts that had become tradition at the school” and learned the facts regarding the thoughts and expectations of the local community. In addition, through his involvement with children efforts and efforts as a teacher, he tried to reconstitute the meaning of understanding children and collaborating & cooperating with parents. This encouraged him to rebuild his ability as a teacher. 2) “Teacher A” noticed the current state of the “purpose of means” seen in long-standing and worthwhile efforts at “Primary School A”. So, he recalled the values that were important in the day-to-day educational activities that teachers and staff inherited frequently in the schools where he had worked so far. This led him to make proposals contributing to school development engaged in distinctive education unique to “Primary School A”.
