Abstract

イギリスの帝国主義的野心によって始まった第2次ボーア戦争(1899-1902)は、イギリス側の当初の予想に反して長期化の様相を呈する。政府は戦争を遂行するために世論を味方につけなければならなかった。それに大きく貢献したものの一つが「戦争もの」と呼ばれる大衆文学である。実際の軍隊が提供できない英雄と勝利の物語を大衆に期待されたそれらには、理想の兵士像や国家像が描き込まれる。本論では特に、これまであまり顧みられなかったドキュメンタリー・タッチの作品に焦点を当て、その主人公に据えられた「トミー・アトキンズ」像を分析した。結果として明らかになったのは、その像が孕む異質性だ。勇猛果敢で母国への忠誠心に溢れる陸軍兵卒は、将校への不満を通して社会の階級的緊張を示唆し、肉体的に退化し道徳的に堕落した現実のフーリガンと結びつく。軍隊はフーリガンを更生する役割を担う一方で、フェアプレーの精神というカモフラージュのもと、将校も兵卒もともにフーリガンと同じく残忍性を示す。既成事実化していたイギリス人とボーア人の優劣、軍隊内の秩序、文明と野蛮といったものの境界の流動化という問題が生じる。ボーア戦争は、それらの問題が今にも噴出せんとするイギリス史上初めての戦争だったのである。しかし、従来の言説に生じた亀裂は「健全な臣民」育成の大合唱によって覆い隠され、社会は「異質な要素」を孕んだまま、悲惨な第一次大戦へと突き進んで行くのである。

The Second Boer War (1899-1902) caused by British imperialistic ambition began to assume an aspect of a prolonged war, contrary to her initial expectations. The government had to win public opinion to its side in order to carry out the war. One of those which largely contributed to that end was the "war books." The public hungered for the stories of heroic soldiers and glorious victories in Boer War literature because the real army could not give them what they wanted it to be and to do. Therefore an essentially imaginary version of the war was delineated in the works. In this paper. I focus on one of the documentary accounts of the war which have received little attention, The Epistles of Atkins (1902) by James Milne, and analyze the image of "Tommy Atkins" which embodies a popular myth of the common soldier. As a result, it becomes clear that Atkins contains the heterogeneous. His protean energies sometimes hint at subversion. Whereas he is undaunted and loyal to the Queen, he suggests a tension between classes through his complaints against officers and connects himself with the physically and mentally degenerated hooligans. While the real army takes a role of rehabilitating them, not only soldiers but officers show the same brutality as hooligans under the camouflage of the spirit of fair play. The established boundaries such as between the British and the Boers, officers and soldiers, and civilization and savagery become fluidized. The Boer War was the first war in British history in which such fluidization was revealed. But those rifts in conventional concepts and discourses were concealed amid a chorus of advocacy of the development of wholesome and healthy "imperial subjects." and people charged ahead to the disastrous First World War.
