Abstract

ePTFE valve, used for the Right Ventricular Outflow Tract (RVOT) reconstruction with good clinical record, has bulging sinus like sinus of valsalva of aorta. Although, this bulging sinus acts preferably for the blood flow, there is no direct flow observation to support this fact and very limited engineering studies are available in this field.This paper aims to study the effect of the bulging sinus of the ePTFE valve on valve opening and closing mechanism. Similarly shaped aorta is utilized to see the effect of bulging sinus on the flow field inside the conduit. Three aortas with different bulging sinus sizes were constructed. Effect of the bulging sinus on valve opening and closing mechanism was directly observed and compared.Based on the experimental data, following conclusions can be obtained.(1)Larger the bulging sinus resulted in wider valve opening area. The largest size bulging sinus opens slightly wider than standard bulging sinus.(2)Lager the bulging sinus resulted in longer opening time.(3)Larger bulging sinuses close quickly, while smaller bulging sinus closes late.
