Abstract

Through tbe implementation of economic reforms beginning in the late 1970s, China has been transformed from a largely undeveloped, command-style economy, into a burgeoning world economic power. While the positive implications of China's transition have been well studied, less attention has been paid to the negative externalities of this colossal economic and societal shift. In particular, this study examines both the causes and potential consequences of the rise of organized and systematized criminality and corruption, as a lens with which to help shed light on the trajectory and sustainability of China's economic and political development.
