Abstract

This study describes the results of 15 listening experiments on various aspects of Japanese intonation. The major fi ndings obtained in this study are as follows:（1）Accentual prominence of each bunsetsu（minimal syntactic phrase comprising a content word possibly followed by particles） gradually decreases in a sequence of semantically restrictive modifi cation（as in hawai-no hoteru-no ryookin“hotel price in Hawaii.”）（.2）A bunsetsu immediately following a semantically focused constituent should have a low degree of accentual prominence.（3）Hypotheses posited on the use of six types of sentence-and bunsetsu-fi nal intonation have been confi rmed.
