Abstract

This study describes the results of 15 listening experiments on various aspects of Japanese intonation. The major fi ndings obtained in this study are as follows:(1)Accentual prominence of each bunsetsu(minimal syntactic phrase comprising a content word possibly followed by particles) gradually decreases in a sequence of semantically restrictive modifi cation(as in hawai-no hoteru-no ryookin“hotel price in Hawaii.”)(.2)A bunsetsu immediately following a semantically focused constituent should have a low degree of accentual prominence.(3)Hypotheses posited on the use of six types of sentence-and bunsetsu-fi nal intonation have been confi rmed.
