Abstract
This paper, in the first person narrative, talks about the author's personal experiences in two research settings: motorcycle gangs in Kyoto and the theatre world in Tokyo. Through the confessional tales about his own life and work, the author aims to show tremendous heuristic potential of participant observation or ethnographic method. In this paper the author also talks about the predicament that organizational ethnography now faces in the academic world that has been stricken by journal-driven research consequent upon the increasing influence of the audit culture.
