Abstract

The main emphasis of current study is to confirm that firm's endemic resources such as market power could be alternative safeguarding mechanisms against trasaction difficulties. This study provides empirical evidences on the performance effects of links between governance forms, exchange attributes and firm-specific resources on the context of forward channel integration of 396 Japanese manufacturers from diverse industries. Our results of analysis showed that firms can overcome transaction difficulties of market incurred by high environmental uncertainty without necessarily integrating a certain marketing function (i.e., downstream distribution). Specifically, we found that highly dominant firms in their product markets are able to use their market power to control discretionary actions of independent intermediaries and thus safeguard channel performances from threat of opportunism even in the highly uncertain environment.
