Abstract

type:text

This article discusses effective practice in applying ICT to elementary school English education programs. Firstly, it briefly reviews the compatibility of ICT with the theoretical background of English education and the education policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The article then discusses the implementation of an ICT-supported English education program at ‘A’ elementary school in Japan. For example, it discusses the measures taken by the school to establish an ICT- and student-friendly English learning environment with the installation of Wi-Fi, the utilization of ‘Skype’, the ALT program and the introduction of one-to-one tablet usage for students. A full account of the educational practices and content of classes is given. Finally, observation reports of lessons are discussed and evaluated along with the TOEFL Primary® results of the learners. The study concludes that ICT-supported English education through the utilization of assistive and adaptive technologies such as Skype and tablets is an excellent way forward for elementary school English education.
