Abstract

This paper publishes as a series of products of a collaborative research project, the Seikatsu-Bunmyaku Rikai Kenkyukai. In this time, the paper concerns on“Manazashi no Jigoku”by Munesuke Mita, which is one of the classics of sociological research in Japan. In this paper, from the perspective of interpretive sociology, we reconsider the augments raised by “Manazashi no Jigoku”with careful attention to singularity of N・N. In particular, by tracing back the actual life history of Nagayama Norio, doubts are raised regarding Mita's argument. Specifically, 1) the context of “inflowing young workers”coming from the peripheral regions by collective employment is not captured, and 2) the context of employers who hire such young workers in urban areas is not taken into account. Discussion about the validity of the dramaturgy approach adopted by Mita is also developed.
