This article aims to reveal the situation of competition in China’s smartphone market and clarify the dynamics of strategies taken by Chinese smartphone companies in recent years. China’s smartphone market and companies are becoming influential worldwide, but Chinese companies’ strategies and the overall situation of Chinese market competition have been subject to very little research. In order to identify the strategies of various companies in China’s smartphone market, we used M.E. Porter’s research findings on the strategy group and strategic dimension to build our analysis framework. By setting the strategic dimensions on performance of smartphone devices and pricing, we visualized the competitive structure of China’s smartphone market and the positions taken by Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, the leading Chinese smartphone companies during the period of 2013 to 2016. We also examined the dynamics of the changes of strategies taken by major smartphone companies, as well as the market’s competitive structure.
