Abstract

This paper reviews discussions about how oral English teaching should be in Japan from the end of Edo to the late of Showa period. Through arguments of Linguists, Literary Scholars, teachers, and a politician, the following four viewpoints on importance and challenges of oral English teaching can be found, (1) denial of pronunciation like native speaker or too rigid and minute teaching, (2) integration of not text reading and conversation but pronunciation and interpretation, (3) metalinguistic aspect of not only English but also Japanese pronunciation (4) foresight to "world Englishes".
