Abstract

In this paper, the phonological nature of tonal movements in Japanese interjections is examined. Contrary to previous analyses, most cases of non-falling movement are shown to be triggered by sentence-final intonation rather than by lexical accents. This paper also demonstrates that conversational expressions that include interjections occasionally use tonal movements that violate the normal rules of accent and intonation. It is also discussed that the use of these irregular movements when making sincere requests and responses is inappropriate.
