Abstract

[ABSTRACT] In this paper, I clarify why Hokkaido Ainu have created and worn bark clothes, not grass fiber clothes . Bark clothes are woven out of bast fibers of arboreous plants. Elm trees, their main materials, are not easily collected, since they grow only in deep mountains. On the other hand, grass fiber clothes are woven out of bast fibers of grasses. Nettle grasses, their main materials, are easily collected in a wide indigenous area. However, while Ainu wear grass fiber clothes mainly in Sakhalin, Ainu wear bark clothes mainly in Hokkaido despite of the difficulty of collection. I solve this puzzle by focusing on the detailed process from collecting the materials to making them into yarns.
