During a public presentation at the National Institute of Floricultural Science, we surveyed guests to determine their attitudes towards floriculture. We received 912 valid responses out of 1972 distributed questionnaires (46%). Men accounted for 32% of respondents, versus 66% for women and 2% who did not specify ; 62% were elderly (older than 50). The most common occupation of male respondents was "office worker" (35%) and female respondents "housewife" (64%). Key results include the following : 1. For all visitors combined, 90% were interested in gardening. Women and the elderly were generally more strongly interested than men and younger visitors. 2. Persons who were highly interested in gardening had more types of flowers in their garden, purchased flowers more frequently, were highly motivated to buy novel flowers, and preferred to own flowers individually rather than sharing public flowers. 3. In general, visitors were satisfied with the current balance between quality and price. They were unwilling to accept either decreased quality or increased price. 4. The application of gene-modification technology to non-food agricultural products such as flowers was accepted much more than was the case for agricultural products used for food (non-acceptance rates of 39% for food versus 19% for non-food). 5. For all visitors combined, 81% were interested in flower tourism, 84% recognized that gardening improved the health of the elderly, and 92% were interested in the ability of flowers to improve the amenity values of their living environment.
