Abstract

In sixteenth-century Poland there were several competing views of the state, witch differed from each other concerning the relationship between religious authority and secular power, the competences of king and parliament, and relations between the social orders. Stanislaw Orzechowski (1513-1566) was one of the most active theorists of the period, and his unique theory of the state was influential until the late seventeenth century. Nevertheless his position in the history of Polish political thought is still not settled. In this article the author analyses the logical structure of his theory in the trilogy which appeared in his last years, Dialogue on the Execution, Quincunx and Polity of the Polish Kingdom, and concludes that Orzechowski's political theory was characterized by a theocratic image of the state, in which the liberty and privilege of the szlachta was subordinated to the authority of Roman Catholic Church. This was a rather isolated view in sixteenth-century Poland, but became suited to the social situation of the seventeenth century.
