A questionnaire survey of schoolteachers at special needs education schools for the visually impaired was conducted to examine in the current status and future shape of career education at such schools. The findings showed that the decline in the number of students and increase in those with multiple disabilities, a growing number of students are unable to enroll in courses that lead to career education. Career options after upper secondary school graduation are also not very promising, with very few organizations accepting such graduates for general or sheltered employment. For this reason, the study proposed the importance of career education that is coherent and clearly focused on developing the capabilities of individual students for future social participation and with attention to the psychological traits of the visually impaired. Furthermore, it shed light to examination into what are "basic ability and generic competency" for students who are visually impaired, in building personal abilities and qualities that lead to career development.
