Abstract

The purpose of this article is to clarify the relationship between learning and identity formation in higher education based on the theories from learning studies and identity studies. Learning studies have addressed their own concepts of identity but they have ignored the inner dynamics of identity formation. Thus, the remaining issue is to theorize the interaction between learning and identity formation. Our study uses the framework of the Simplified Identity Formation Theory synthesized from identity studies. This framework clarifies the dynamics of identity formation as a triadic model of ego, personal and social identity formation, and enables the reconstitution of the relationship between learning and identity formation in higher education.
