Film historian and filmmaker Mamoru Makino directed the documentary TV series, Okinawa Industry, along with some other films about Okinawa during the 1960s. When TV broadcasting began around 1960, the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) also started to produce and broadcast its own TV programs. The Okinawa Industry series was the only TV program that USCAR outsourced the production to Okinawa Kagaku Kyozai Sha (Okinawa Scientific Teaching Materials, Inc.), which in turn hired Mr. Makino as the director, editor, and writer of the series. This interview reveals how Makino became involved in producing Okinawa Industry and some other films on Okinawa, and what it was like to make films during the US rule of Okinawa.
