Abstract
In this paper, I investigate the local community of Shinano province in early modern Japan. In this community, canals were flowing through a number of domains. Villages were often in fierce conflict with each other over the use of water. However, villages co-operated with each other in disaster recovery. Considerable expense was necessary to repair damaged canals. Village raised funds for construction work in cooperation, made a construction plan, and received the permission of the local government office. In addition, it was also necessary to consider the life of farmers in the fief of another lord. This is a problem that has not received much attention in previous studies, and I investigate it by examining the old historical records left in private homes.
