Abstract

In this paper we discuss effectiveness of “dialogue workshop” as a means of developing students’ transferable skills, by examining two types of dialogue workshop on “driving automation technologies” and their ethical, legal and social implications. Our students engaged in the dialogue workshops in two different positions: as a discussant and as a facilitator of group discussion. Students feedback to the dialogue workshops indicates that: students as a discussant learned importance and necessity of having dialogue on ethically and socially complicated issues with those from differing backgrounds and with differing ways of thinking and values; and students as a discussion facilitator learned to play an active role in co-creating dialogue with diverse participants. We argue that dialogue workshop can provide our students with opportunity to learn transferable skills through unique learning experience of seeking, identifying and actually playing a role in dialogue.
