Abstract

The 2013 implementation of a quality assurance system has brought about fundamental changes in the field of medical education in Japan. Its primary aim is the advancement of the nation's medicine and health care through education based on global standards. These medical and health standards will inevitably result in Japanese medical professionals considering from a more global perspective issues such as health and social justice, the social determinants of health, and agendas for social work. A challenge for medical anthropologists is to bring global anthropological knowledge into medical education both effectively and creatively. This paper examines two means by which anthropology can enhance the quality of medical education in Japan through the dissemination of information to medical students concerning global health agendas. One involves the integration of medical anthropology into social medicine and global health as a part of behavioral and social science curricula. The other involves the inclusion of anthropological fieldwork in regional medical and health training as a way to broaden students' perspectives.
