Abstract

We developed serious game named " Kanpon 2 " to provide enjoyable self-teaching educational materials for pharmacognosy . This software is an upgraded version of previous software named " Kanpon " which is " a slot machine -like game". Usability has been improved. 1) The screen was made easy to see. 2) A keyword search function was attached. 3) The structural formula of the main components of herbal medicine can be displayed. The biggest improvement is the introduction of achievement tests to confirm the learning effects of the game in "Kanpon 2". In the case of 15 student volunteers, a repeat play of short-term (20min/a day/a week, 4weeks) presented a small but significant increase ( 7.5 point p<0.05) of test scores. Further increases in test scores might thus be expected, if play time is extended. As we can use the software on the internet, anyone can use it anytime, anywhere and it is free of charge. We hope that many students will enjoy learning pharmacognosy with this new software " Kanpon 2 ".
