CompWood is an international conference concerning computation methods in timber engineering started by the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) in Vienna, Austria in 2017. The conference is held once every two years, and CompWood 2019 was held at Linnaeus University in Växjö, Sweden 16th– 20th June 2019. Växjö Municipality in southern Sweden and Skellefteå Municipality in northern Sweden are both well known worldwide as innovative wooden towns. The total number of the participants was not very high, but many prominent professors and researchers attended, mainly from European countries. Unfortunately, there was only one participant from Japan. My presentation outlined the results of experimental studies using steel plates and drift-pins inserted into CLT joints. This study was carried out as joint research between Nippon Institute of Technology and Kanto Gakuin University. At this conference, all international participants were further able to deepen their academic knowledge as well as develop valuable networks. They were also motivated to achieve the next steps in their own research activities. After the closing of this conference, we had an opportunity to visit the site of a new 6-storey wooden town hall building under construction in the centre of Växjö.
