But Some Of Us Are Brave: All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men: Black Women's Studies was published in 1982 as a textbook for Black Women’s Studies in the United States. As a result of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Black Studies and Women’s Studies had received increased attention at universities all over the country in the 1970s. Nevertheless, during the 1980s, African-American women still were and today continue to be “hidden figures” in American society. By focusing on their personal stories and the spiritual messages they incorporate, this paper will argue that within the heritage of African-American women we can find empowering messages that transcend the boundaries of ethnicity and nationality. With this paper, I also wish to pay tribute to the memory of Aretha Franklin, ‘Queen of Soul,’ who passed away in August 2018.
