Abstract

The purpose of this study was to classify the psychosocial skills improved by sports activities in junior sports clubs and in junior high school athletic clubs and to reveal the process of the generalization of those skills to the life skills in pupils and junior high school students. The students(N=173, ages 11-14),their parents(N=169) and coaches(N=17) were asked to complete the questionnaires about what psychosocial skills were acquired through sports activities in junior sports clubs and junior high school athletic clubs, what enabled the students to develop the psychosocial skills in their club activities, whether the skills were practically useful in their daily lives or not, how the generalized skills benefited them in daily situations other than sports activities, and what advanced and affected the generalization of psychosocial skills. The type of psychosocial skills and the factors which enhanced the generalization of those skills were analyzed using the KJ method. The following results were obtained: 1) The students, their parents, and coaches commonly recognized that the psychosocial skills gained from sports activities were effective in developing the good relationship with others, doing things patiently, and solving various problems. 2) It was pointed out by the most participants in this research that those skills were actually useful in their daily lifes. 3) It was suggested that the generalized psychosocial skills contributed to the improvement of the students' quality of life. 4) The factors which promoted the generalization of the psychosocial skills were as follows: making practical use of them in everyday situations, getting some successful experiences and positive emotions resulting from using the skills, having some significant role-models who can use the skills effectively, and recognizing the value of the psychosocial skills.
