Abstract

Aim: Clarify the experiences in the career advancement of medium-build male nurses. Method: We conducted a semi-structured interview targeting male nurses with five to 14 years of nursing experience and five or more years of experience in their current field of employment. The content was analyzed according to verbatim records. The study was approved by the institutional review board of the facility affiliated with the study and by the facility cooperating in the survey. Results: We interviewed nine male nurses. We extracted 137 codes from the verbatim records, and classified the codes into eight categories and 26 sub-categories. These were then divided into experiences that promoted career advancement and experiences that hindered career advancement. Conclusion: Medium-build male nurses attained experience in promoting their own career advancement by ambitiously engaging in career advancement with support from the organization. Conversely, the significant financial anxiety associated with proceeding to the next stage of education was an experience that hindered advancement, which suggests that establishment of a system where males nurses are offered work on night shifts or other such strategies, as a means of financial support, could be a means of preventing hesitation about embarking on career advancement.
