This study suggests a method for the practical measurement and comparison of the transaction costs associated with intra-organisational governance activities. Our first method focuses on the activities carried out in formal schemes to enhance governance activities and the second estimates the total activities by firm size. By conducting a case study in an Austrian telecommunication group using interview data, we reveal that the size (the number of people involved), duration, and frequency of communication can be used to quantify intra-organisational governance activities. Therefore, the relation between these aspects should be considered when measuring the transaction costs of each activity. Our study helps not only researchers enhance their empirical analysis to find cost-efficient governance activities but also business managers review existing governance activities and improve their efficiency. In particular, our findings are helpful for researchers in the governance area to estimate informal and difficult-to-observe governance activities in their models.
