A Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis of Linking Adverbials in EFL Writing: Identifying L1 Related Differences

This study explored the use of linking adverbials (e.g., on the other hand, furthermore, in fact) in the English as a Foreign Language essays produced by writers of three distinct language backgrounds: Chinese, Indonesian, and Korean. To control for potentially influential factors, such as task type, topic, and target language proficiency, essays written to address one specific writing prompt at the B1_2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English was used. Applying functional category and individual item analyses, specific intragroup production tendencies and intergroup production differences were identified in relation to the writing of each L1 group. Findings include relative overuse of resultative linking adverbials (e.g., therefore) by L1 Korean writers, time markers (e.g., nowadays) by L1 Chinese writers, and underuse of contrastive linking adverbials (e.g., however) by L1 Indonesian writers of L2 English.
