Background: The World Mental Health Survey in Japan revealed that, in the last twelve months, the prevalence of mental disorders was at 11.0% for young people aged 20 – 34 years old. Owing to this, enacting mental health measures for young people, such as university students, has become an urgent issue. In 2017, 98.7% of Japanese people in their 20s owned a smartphone, indicating that smartphones are now a common and crucial tool used by young people. However, there are many aspects in recent research on mental health care using smartphone applications (apps) for university students which remain unclear. In this review, the author summarizes the findings of recent studies about the relationship between mental healthcare and smartphone apps in university students. Methods: The author collected data from Pubmed, Igaku Chuo Zasshi, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO by combining key terms related to mental health and smartphones for university students. Results: The initial search identified 181 studies. After applying the filtering criteria, nine studies remained. Eight of these studies were English articles while one was Japanese. Out of the nine studies, six studies were observational studies and three were intervention studies; all interventional studies were not randomized control trials. In terms of apps used in these studies, six of them used commercially available apps and the other three used apps which were independently developed for the research. Conclusions: Currently, there are few studies on mental health using smartphone apps for university students. Further research is needed to verify that smartphone apps are useful for mental health care of university students.
