In Michel Foucault's “Les mots et les choses”, his description of explanation on the change of representations in 17th century is highly abstract and difficult to understand especially for Japanese readers in the cause of its Japanese translation. In this article, I try to make an easy explanation of his semiological description on representations and meaning for understanding his argument. Foucault argues that in Renaissance era a signifier (a sign or text) represents another signified figure, but in Classic era a signifier represents a signified in the same figure of sign. It means that concept of representation concrete in Renaissance became abstract in Classic era, and that diverse possibilities for interpretation of signs lost in Classic era. I think it suggests that Foucault and McLuhan share same cognition about the changing of interpretative openness from Renaissance to Classic era.
