Abstract

Eileen Gray (1878–1976) was a furniture designer and a female architect who worked mainly in France in the first half of the 20th century. This paper aim sis to clarify the logical structure of a unique discourse concerning Gray’s first building house, E. 1027 (1929). Gray’s explanation on the exact space of E. 1027 naturally crosses the logic of furniture / architecture. There is no definite threshold between furniture and architecture regarded as extension of physical and sensitive gesture. In general, it is impossible to treat immovable walls and furniture that can be removed from the frame and moveable in the same method, but they are treated as equivalent by Gray. In other words, Gray disassembles the walls and make it like an assembled house, at the same time, she does not make it all like buildings in the transportation room by incorporating it in the wall. Gray treats “walls” just like furniture, and at the same time handles furniture like “wall”. Gray’s ambiguous “wall = furniture” is the unique notion to create room for free movement by gesture. For Gray, human demands are limitlessly ambiguous and diverse, and space tricks need to respond to it.
