Abstract

Emergency medical cases whose nature cannot be immediately identified by a medical institution receiving a patient have been reported nationwide, and are becoming a social problem. This paper clarified differences based on geographic area in transportation characteristics of patients with gastrointestinal bleeding that were difficult to identify in Osaka city, and examined measures to enable smooth ambulance transport of patients to hospitals. The study used a spatial analysis unit called"emergency service area by nearest neighbor interpolation", devised to examine areal differences in transportation characteristics of patients with gastrointestinal bleeding based on transportation time and the number of times the medical institution was contacted per weekday/holidays and time zones. Osaka City was classified into five areal groups according to transportation characteristics, and results confirmed clear areal differences in transportation difficulties depending on weekdays, holidays, and time zones. Based on the prevalence of patients with gastrointestinal bleeding and location of medical institutions receiving patients, areas likely to have an imbalance between the two were identified, and the introduction of a rotation system of emergency care among emergency hospitals will be considered for affected areas.
