This study consists of determining the content of several piano hiki utai textbooks and other teaching materials needed for the “Piano for Childcare Workers ” scheduled to begin in 2020. For the comparison of hiki utai textbooks, the accompaniment sheet music for four children’s songs was compared. Even in the same songs, supplemental indications in the score for enriching the music, such as tone, fingering, dynamics, and articulation, were totally different for each textbook, showing the editors’ goal of improving the accompaniment of the learner. At this university, over 50% of the students are beginners at piano, and there are only three piano classes available. When we considered how students can attempt to acquire the skills of piano hiki utai, textbooks seemed to hold the key. In addition, we had a strong belief that choosing materials to match the level of the learners was the correct approach. However, when we thought about what purpose piano hiki utai is needed for, we knew that it is building closeness with young children. At the same time, we realized that it is important for the instructor to respect the independence of learners. The philosophy of this university is “humanistic education.” Accordingly, acquiring the skills of piano hiki utai, which is important from promoting development such as expressive ability in young children, should be carried out through mutual interaction between the instructor and the learners. Therefore, musical scores that build closeness with children are precisely the type of learning materials that are appropriate for use at this university. Whether or not textbooks can do this depends on how they draw out the independence of learners.
