In this study, the redox response of strawberry plants treated with H2O2 were evaluated by measuring the time-course of H2O2 contents and the activity of the antioxidative system. Fragaria × ananassa Duch.‘Yotsuboshi’ seedlings were transplanted to DFT hydroponic apparatus containing H2O2, and were grown for 80 days under white florescent lamps. Following this cultivation, the growth, H2O2 contents, antioxidant contents, and antioxidative enzyme activities were examined in the leaves of strawberry. The results of this study showed that the treatment with 1.0 mM H2O2 significantly decreased the number of leaves, petiole length, and the fruit yield in strawberry. Conversely, the treatment with 0.1 mM H2O2 significantly increased the fruit yield. Hydrogen peroxide content and the activities of antioxidative enzymes (ascorbic acid peroxidase and catalase activities) were increased immediately after treatment with 0.1 and 1.0 mM H2O2. However, only the 0.1 mM H2O2 treatment caused a gradual decrease H2O2 concentrations in leaves from 3 to 6 h after treatment. These results suggested that a relatively rapid increase in antioxidative activities against oxidative stresses and an even more rapid decrease in H2O2 content were important factors in the growth regulation in strawberry upon treatment with appropriate concentrations of H2O2.
