Abstract
type:Article
Use of videoconferencing in formal and informal education has become prevalent in Japan as a way to increase the opportunities to use English in authentic communication. This paper reports the results of a quasi-experimental study of a task-based EFL instruction using videoconferencing as the goal of preceding in-class tasks and activities. Research questions were to see the effects of videoconferencing on the learnersʼ output in speaking. Eleven pairs of Japanese EFL learners experienced weekly videoconferencing for two semesters. The task for the pairs was to discuss social issues with peers in-class and later with their Filipino conversation partner over videoconferencing. The pre- and post-test results, using TOEFL style tests, showed significant improvement in overall listener judgement assessments. Speech improvement was also found in fluency and complexity based on quantitative measurement for CAF through transcribed data.
