Abstract

In the early 1950s, the newly established PRC government initiated various political campaigns in an effort to change people’s mind. Under the forceful implementation, many young intellectuals started to accept socialist ideas and values and cultivate the sense of belonging to the new state system. Yet their thought transformation can not be simply summarized as “the will of individual conquered by the will of the state”; it was a complex process mutually shaped by multiple factors. These factors can be divided into two categories: external factors (political campaign and ideological propaganda) and internal factors (individual values and life experience). Using the case of the college student S in the early 1950s, this article analyzes how the abovementioned factors functioned and reveals the internal mechanism of the thought transformation among young intellectuals in the early PRC.
