Abstract
A study of processes for preserving remnants of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthqua ke and tsunami has shown the following: 1 Preservation of a remnant that was the site of direct deaths often faces objection from surviving family members. Effective in such cases are acknowledgment of the remnant s academic value by an expert panel and the option of leaving the matter undecided. 2 It is not easy for local governments and residents of communities in the midst of rebuilding processes to work on practicalities of a preservation process. Setting up a support group facilitates the process.
