Abstract

The aim of this study is to clarify the educational effect of a collaboration between parents and schools with respect to social background. In this study, I analyzed the educational effect that such collaboration exerts on the child, focusing on two collaborative structures: "partnership-type collaboration," in which the parents receive information from the school, and "parental-participationtype collaboration," in which the parents actively participate in school events. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, there was a difference in parental-participation-type cooperation based on social background. Second, collaboration between the school and the family had a positive educational effect on a child's academic ability, independent of family composition and the child's own social relations, particularly in the case of parental-participation-type collaboration. Third, the academic ability of children from families of higher social status that do not cooperate with the school is lower than that of children whose parents do cooperate. Finally, partnership-type collaboration can negatively affect the academic ability of children from lower-class families, suggesting that even when a family from a lower social class has a relationship of trust with the school, this does not necessarily lead to an improvement in academic ability.
