明治初期から後期にかけて、三井呉服店は業態のみならず建物を西洋風に改築して、三越呉服店（百貨店）へと生まれ変わった。本稿はなぜ三越に注目したのかという問いに答えるとともに、江戸から東京へと移り変わる中、様々なメディア、その中でも主に版画、絵葉書、双六などの史料を分析対象として、そこに描かれた越後屋、三越の姿から、近世と近代の東京と江戸の名所変遷を明らかにするものである。徳川将軍家の没落と共に旧時代に取り残されつつあった呉服店から百貨店へと転身を遂げ、少なくとも昭和初期頃まで、江戸の名所から東京の新名所へと転換することに成功し、その命脈を保つことができた。

From the early Meiji Edo Period to the end of the Meiji Era, the Mitsui Kimono Shop was reborn as the Mitsukoshi Department Store, a transformation that involved both a remodeled business format as well as the construction of a new Western style building to house the long-established company. By examining depictions of Mitsui and Mitsukoshi in historical materials such as woodblock prints, postcards, and suguroku (a popular Japanese board game), this paper considers how the changes undertaken by the Mitsukoshi Department Store played an important role in the transition of the city of Edo into modern Tokyo, particularly the evolution of famous landmarks and locations during this period. This analysis indicates that although the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate had rendered the Mitsui Kimono Shop old-fashioned, its transformation into the Mitsukoshi Department Store revitalized the location to become one of the preeminent attractions in Tokyo until at least the early Showa Era.
