Abstract

Shiblī Nu'mānī, a famous Urdu biographer and leading Muslim scholar, compared Arabic and Persian poetry in his five-volume Urdu work Shi'r al-'Ajam (The Poetry of Persia). The peculiarities found in his comparison are as follows : (I) Shiblī preferred Arabic poetry to Persian poetry, accusing the latter of being unrealistic. (2) He did not denounce Persian poetry as a whole. He tried to offer its objective overview, referring both to its strong points and weak points. (3) He made an effort to excuse the weak pints of Persian poetry.
