Paul Ricœur’s work is characterized by an interplay of three philosophical movements : reflexive philosophy, phenomenology, and hermeneutics. How was Ricœur’s unique philosophy formed? Is it possible to identify a basic motif of his philosophy? To address these questions, we examined the relationship between Ricœur and Gabriel Marcel. Examining Ricœur’s views on Marcel’s “second reflection” helped us clarify why Ricœur moved to phenomenology and why he followed the tradition of reflexive philosophy. Furthermore, understanding the developmental process of Ricœur’s philosophy helped us identify the basic motif of his philosophy—his interest in existence and human capabilities. Ricœur returned to existence, using phenomenology and reflexive philosophy as a detour, and deepened his understanding of human capabilities. Considering the relationship between reflexive philosophy and Ricœur also helped us reveal a significant aspect of ethical reflection: ethical reflection had a structure of detour and return.
